Goal! The Dream Begins by: Robert Rigby

Archetypes throughout the story of Santiago's task of becoming a pro soccer player.

The Mentor

Glen acts like a mentor to Santiago by helping him get to play on a proffesional soccer team called Newcastle. It was always Santiago's dream to be able to play pro soccer. Also Glen lets Santiago live with him and Glen takes care of him and tries to support him during his rough times of trying to make the team. When Santiago arrives Glen tells him, "You can stay with me till you get sorted." (p.53) Note: Wow Glen is a really great guy. First he helps Santiago get a chance to tryout for Newcastle and now he will let him stay at his apartment too.

Warrior

Santiago is like a warrior because he faces the challenge of trying out for a team in hard conditions that he is not used to in playing soccer. Also he has to try and play soccer amidst having asthma which is really hard for him because he can sometimes run out of breath while running. But in the end he succeeds. In the book when Santiago goes to the ball this happened, "But as it skidded off the muddy turf, Santiago totally misjudged the bounce and the ball slipped away over the touchline." (p.67) Note: Poor Santiago, he's not used to playing soccer when it's wet. Now he'll probably not make the team with a mistake that bad.

Mother Figure

A mother figure is Santiago's grandmother. When he's in L.A. he lives with her and his father. So she mostly takes care of him in the house and makes food for him. When Santiago's father takes all of Santiago's savings to buy a new truck, Santiago's grandma uses her own savings to buy Santiago a ticket to England so he can tryout for Newcastle. When he's in England Santiago often calls his grandmother who comforts him during his hard times. This is what Santiago's grandmother says to Santiago, "This is your plane ticket. It's dated one week from now to give you time to get a passport." (p.43) Note: Santiago's grandma really cares for him and wants him to fulfill his dream of playing soccer in England.

Shadow

A shadow in the story is Santiago's father, Hernan Munez. He is a shadow because he really doesn't want Santiago to fulfill his dreams of becoming a pro soccer player. He keeps on telling him that it will never happen and it is impossible. Also when Santiago is saving up his money for a plane ticket to England, his dad takes all the money and combines it with his to buy a truck. Hernan yells at Santiago, "To chase your stupid dream!"..."Big time soccer player in England!"(p.37) Note: His dad is really mean to him. Santiago just wants to try but no, his dad has to take all the money and keep on telling him that being a pro soccer player is impossible.

Shapeshifter

A shapeshifter in the story is Hughie Magowan. Hughie is a player for the team Newcastle, that Santiago is trying out for. During Santiago's first days Hughie really despises him and tries to stop him from doing well by putting him down and hurting him. But when Santiago finally does make the team and is really good, Hughie starts to like Santiago and helps him out sometimes. After Santiago got fouled in one game, Hughie fouls the guy who fouled him. Hughie tells Santiago, "He'll think twice about nobbling you again."(p.144) Note: Looks like even Hughie could be a nice person while still hurting other people though.

Trickster

A trickster in the story is a soccer player called Gavin Harris. He is bought by the club Newcastle for 8.4 million pounds. But when he starts playing games he starts playing very badly and messing up a lot. Also he is constantly getting into trouble with the coach, by not showing up to practices on time. Instead he goes clubbing, and during when he's clubbing he gets caught in pictures of him doing some bad and funny things. The coach says to Gavin, "But now please explain why you are dressed for a discotheque and are forty-seven minutes late for training."(p.142) Note: Gavin is alwas just having fun and almost never shows up for practice. If he won't take this seriously he should just be kicked off the team.
